It’s funny, we’ve been volunteering with Brighten a Corner for a while now, and this is the first post I’ve made. Well, funny may not be completely correct, but you get the picture. The project for March was for a family in Nipomo:

Liz works with battered women in the county and Manuel used to be a landscape contractor. Four years ago Manuel was diagnosed with Amyo- trophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) commonly known as Lou Gherig’s disease. Liz works faithfully with those who are literally beaten down every day, then she comes home to love and care for her husband.
The mobile home in which they live in Nipomo is very clean but outdated and increasingly not meeting Manuel’s needs. It gets very cold in the winter and at night, which makes things even more difficult for Manuel. It is also not handicapped friendly, and as he moves closer to needing a wheelchair permanently, that becomes increasingly necessary.

We were able to only help out for a couple of hours, but I want to encourage to keep an eye on their web site for future projects where you can help. Brighten a Corner is also always looking for financial help. You can see pictures of this most recent project via their Facebook fan page, or go to the Brighten A Corner homepage and check out past projects.

A buddy, and fellow motorcyclist, passed away today at a spot I know very well. I ride it virtually everyday I go to work. In some ways, it scares me. I guess it should. As a rider, I know every time I get on the bike, there’s a chance that things don’t go well. However, that chance exists in a car, or walking across the street, heck, even sitting at work things can go terribly wrong. Things do go wrong. I guess that’s why we wear our gear, our seat belts, buy cars with air bags… to reduce the chances, but we never eliminate them. We each have a number of days allotted to us; use them wisely.

Wicke, I’ll miss ya buddy. Shiny side up.

Last night at church we had a fantastic dinner and presentation given by Taste of Hope. It was a fascinating journey told through food and the personal story of Saba Tewolde. Saba grew up in Ethiopia during the 80′s. Most will remember the intense famine that griped the country during that time. The country and it’s hardships set a compelling background for Saba’s story without defining who she is.

The food was amazing as we were served traditional Ethiopian dishes, starting with Fitfit, a spicy bread and tomatoe appetizer. The main course was composed of a Key Wat (a beef stew), Misir Wat (a lentil stew), Gomen (Kale and potatoes) and a salata. All were to be eaten using the traditional Ethiopian bread, Injera. The dinner was followed by a chocolate cake, and most importantly, coffee. Coffee is extreamely important to Ethiopia as it was discovered there and is a cheif export of the country.

If it was just dinner alone, I would recommend an evening with Taste of Hope, but after dinner we got to hear Saba’s story and her passion for helping her country. There were not many dry eyes as Saba spoke about her journey from Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia, through Europe and finally becoming a political refuge here in America. Her testimony of how God has led her and her hope for Ethipoia’s furture were heart felt and demand the listener take some action.

You can find out more or setup your own Taste of Hope night by going to http://www.tasteofhopeworldwide.org.

As you ask yourself the question, how do you answer? I thought it was very interesting how selfish most of the answers are, including our own. The answer I was impressed with, was a guy who answered very differently then I thought. Which leads to the next thought.

What ideas did you have about each speaker before they answered the question? What do you think that says about you? Is that something you want to change?
