One Break Coming Up
Posted on 1 May 2009 | 1 response
As any parent of a boy probably already knows, it’s not a matter of “if” just “when” you will make a visit to the local ER. Today was our turn. Hayden was at school and running during PE when he fell. The fall didn’t hurt him… A kid, following closely, tripped over him and in an effort to stop the kid from falling on him, Hayden raided his hand to hold him up, only his wrist did not handle the impact with strength and grace. In Hayden’s words “It felt like getting hit with a sledge hammer and the crack was loud!”
Sitting in hospital, he described his arm as wormy, you know, like a worm.

Wormy Arm
He handled the pain and the situation really well. Prior to setting his arm, he was all hooked up to monitors and then they used an interesting drug to put him to sleep for just a short time.

I'm all Hooked Up
It took an amazing amount of the drug, considering that Hayden only weighs about 70 lbs. Not only was he given a decent amount of the drug, but while sedated, he moved a lot. Man, that kid is strong. I helped by trying to keep his legs still, but it was so hard to watch and be part of. I ended up a little flushed and the nurses got concerned I might be the next patient. I sat down after his arm was set and the nurse handed me some oxygen.
When all was said and done, his cast was on and he still had a great attitude. The set looked good in the second x-rays, but we’ll have an appointment with an orthopedist next week to see whats next for Hayden. A big thank you to all the Nurses and Doctors involved today. The ER is never a fun place to be, but it can be made a lot worse by bad doctors and nurses.

Wrapped and Ready
He’ll get a real case next week, so if you’re around, please make sure and sign his cast, I know he’s looking forward to that.
Jon Ward at Gather

With a mix of vocals from Eddie Vedder and Johnny Cash, Jon Ward’s powerful vocals filled the small Arroyo Grande wine bar. Jon played a mix of soulful covers and heartfelt originals, like Man Down, a profound song of a man planning to trade in his family for a new one.
At times, Jon barely needed an amp, his powerful voice more than enough to fill the room. At other times his bass vocals rumbled the table that my Peachy Canyon Zin sat on. If you get a chance, definitely check out Jon Ward, he often plays in North County, which is why it’s my first time listening to my x-coworker. It’s been my loss for missing him until now.
As for my Zin, it was served a tad cold, but quickly came to temp. A very smooth Zin, but with hints of cherry and pepper, but overall wasn’t too complex. My time at Gather was much nicer than opening night, but that should be expected given the crowded nature of opening night. It started as a small crowd of only 8-10, but grew to about 25. Gather luckily has plenty of seating which made my stay extremely enjoyable. I should also mention the
acoustics were much better with the smaller crowd. I had no trouble hearing Jon’s lyrics and guitar. It’s a great location sitting in the village. I also had a chance to checkout their recently re-done outside deck. I think it’ll be a great location for some small shows during the beautiful Central Coast summer nights. If you like wine or local brews you should check it out.

I did the funnest little project over the last day; converting a new Dell Mini9 (Inspiron 910) to a Mac NetBook! Thankfully, there is a great write up for the conversion project as it would probably have never been done without it. How those guys figure it out is amazing.
So first thing is, we start with a working Mini9 running Windows XP. Thanks to Jamie for the hook up!

Man, we can’t seem to get on track or make a shot. I’m particularly shooting poorly right now. It bugs when you work so hard to get the position you want, fight for the shot you want and it doesn’t drop. Anyway, I continue to practice and I am being more aggressive inside. I got to the line twice last night, which is new for me… Too bad I didn’t make any of my free throws. Here’s this weeks press release.

Brutal game, at least from a scoring and performace standpoint. It was still fun though.

Fun Ride with Hayden

After a quick lunch, it was back out. I wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted to go, but I figured south was a good start. We stopped for some pictures just outside of Lompc, and then Hayden wanted to head home. I don’t like back tracking over the same roads, so I spiced it up a little, although we did back track some.
It’s always fun to get out, pretty much, no matter what the weather, but when it’s beautiful and warm, you gotta go. Of course the bugs were enjoying the day as well, as can be seen by my helmet. 😎

Shane @ Gather Wine Bar

Shane Plays with no hands
Shane plays a mix of classics and self written music. Many of the tunes he jazzes up with a flamenco style strum, utilizing lots of body hits to the guitar body, filling his music with more than a solo player is normally capable. He has a great voice to compliment his playing style, I just wish I got to hear more of it.
Unfortunately, it was a Grand Opening, so it was rather noisy and the acoustics of Gather didn’t lend well to amplify much other than the vocal buzz of all the patrons.
Speaking of Gather, it was the Grand Opening and it was a packed house. When I showed up at 8p, I was almost not allowed in due to the number of people currently occupying the building. The decor was nice and felt homey. Kari and crew did a very nice job setting it up. I’ll have to go again when it isn’t quite so busy so I can say more about the wine.

Taste of Hope

Last night at church we had a fantastic dinner and presentation given by Taste of Hope. It was a fascinating journey told through food and the personal story of Saba Tewolde. Saba grew up in Ethiopia during the 80’s. Most will remember the intense famine that griped the country during that time. The country and it’s hardships set a compelling background for Saba’s story without defining who she is.
The food was amazing as we were served traditional Ethiopian dishes, starting with Fitfit, a spicy bread and tomatoe appetizer. The main course was composed of a Key Wat (a beef stew), Misir Wat (a lentil stew), Gomen (Kale and potatoes) and a salata. All were to be eaten using the traditional Ethiopian bread, Injera. The dinner was followed by a chocolate cake, and most importantly, coffee. Coffee is extreamely important to Ethiopia as it was discovered there and is a cheif export of the country.
If it was just dinner alone, I would recommend an evening with Taste of Hope, but after dinner we got to hear Saba’s story and her passion for helping her country. There were not many dry eyes as Saba spoke about her journey from Ethiopia to Saudi Arabia, through Europe and finally becoming a political refuge here in America. Her testimony of how God has led her and her hope for Ethipoia’s furture were heart felt and demand the listener take some action.
